In this post, I will share my story of one year of ups and downs while starting my business online; every idea that all beginners may have in mind, all the reasons, the obstacles, and the tips to help you start and continue progressing, and overall, run your online business successfully.

I am going to put myself in your shoes and imagine how tempting it would be to have your own online business and how satisfying it would be to travel across the world holding your laptop or camera and enjoying your tours without even thinking about the time you want to spend, or worrying about a boss waiting for you to return. You certainly seek financial freedom.

If you think that making money online is lucrative and life-changing, then you are right. But if you think it is easily obtainable, think twice. 

Starting an online business is not what 90% of Youtubers tell you. The majority of them cheat you to drive traffic (audience) to their channels and thus make money. You can be easily fooled by video thumbnails showing you that you can earn thousands of dollars without any effort and skills. Believe me, those videos have nothing to do with making money.

Furthermore, building an online business also needs to lay the foundations of the building in the most appropriate place with the most reliable building materials.  

To sum up, nothing comes easily. But to be honest, if anybody can do it, you can as well. That’s it.

Which online business should you consider?

As I have mentioned before, starting a business online requires building your foundations. These foundations are made of the skills you need to survive in this challenging world where billions of sites, applications, and platforms do exist.

The first mistake I made is that I quit my job before preparing myself and with low knowledge of all aspects of the internet. I thought I could do anything by learning fast and making a leap into it.

My second mistake was wasting a lot of time searching for what was more suitable for me to start with, what works and what doesn’t. I tried everything and failed with almost everything. 

Because I was jobless at that time, and time was ticking, I was always demotivated, especially when I tried to find an online payment method like PayPal, which I couldn’t since I live in a country that is restricted by almost all online payment methods.

This was another mistake you should avoid: putting the cart in front of the horse. Keep in mind that building a business rather than thinking about revenues is the key to success. Start building, do your homework, and the money will come eventually.

Despite making unrivaled mistakes and wasting months without any clear vision of what I wanted and what suited me the best, I was gaining a lot of knowledge in many fields, especially in digital marketing. I kept learning and I took many certificates from both Google and Coursera until I made my decision.

Now it’s your turn to avoid wasting time and consider my results.

Plan, Plan, Plan then Plan

Planning is half the job, if not more. First, you need to know what business suits you the best because it is impracticable to do something that you have no idea about. There are hundreds of business types to do. Let me mention some, then we will dive into practical advice.

Also, keep in mind that your business will depend enormously on the audience that will buy, upvote, read, and ask for a service. The more traffic you have, the more likely you are to succeed. 

Driving traffic to your business should be on top of your planning sheet. Try to find a solution that converts into more views and sales depending on your niche. Knowing about your audience, and what they like, or ask for, lets you target them directly and save a lot of time.

Many people, like relatives or some friends, will tell you that you are wasting your time and that those who have online businesses took years and years to be successful. The same happens when compared to Youtubers who say that running a YouTube channel is not lucrative. The more they demotivate you, the more you have to persist, and the more you succeed.

The word “building” means building your blocks one by one. In real life, building a house will eventually come to an end, while building a virtual business needs to be consistent and never has an end. The more you add blocks, the more your construction is rigid and attractive.

Always do your job on time; otherwise, your audience will leave you. It is going to take some time, but I believe it will pay off.
